Different By Design - Autism Support

An Autism-Affirming Discussion & Support Group

Discover understanding. Celebrate differences. Build connection.

Autism isn't something to be fixed. It's a different way of experiencing, processing, and interacting with the world.

Inspired by the philosophy of Dr. Barry Prizant's Uniquely Human, this discussion group explores autism through a compassionate, strengths-based, and neurodiversity-affirming lens. Together, we'll move beyond behaviour management and toward understanding, acceptance, and authentic connection.

Whether you're Autistic yourself or supporting an Autistic child, this group offers a welcoming community where everyone's experiences are valued and respected.

Why a Combined Group?

Autistic people and caregivers often receive information about autism from very different perspectives.

Bringing both voices into the same supportive space creates opportunities for deeper understanding, shared learning and more respectful relationships.

Autistic lived experience is treated as essential knowledge—not an optional addition.

Parents and caregivers are supported in asking questions, reflecting on their experiences and developing strategies without speaking over or dismissing Autistic voices.

Together we'll explore:

Understanding Autism Through a Different Lens

Move beyond myths and outdated approaches.
Learn to understand behaviours as meaningful responses to experiences rather than problems to eliminate.

Understanding the Autistic Brain

Explore sensory processing, communication styles, executive functioning, monotropism, nervous system differences, and emotional regulation through a neurodiversity-affirming perspective.

Honouring Individual Differences

Discover why there is no "one way" to be Autistic.
Celebrate strengths, interests, passions, and authentic ways of experiencing the world.

Building Authentic Connection

Develop relationships based on curiosity, respect, collaboration, and trust instead of compliance or control.

Supporting Emotional Well-Being

Learn practical ways to reduce overwhelm, support regulation, prevent burnout, and create environments where Autistic people can thrive.

Communication Beyond Words

Explore different communication styles and learn how behaviour, movement, interests, silence, and sensory needs all communicate important information.

Practical Everyday Supports

Discover strategies for navigating school, work, family life, friendships, routines, transitions, sensory needs, and self-advocacy while respecting autonomy.

Leaving With Greater Understanding

You'll leave with practical tools, increased confidence, deeper empathy, and a renewed appreciation that different doesn't mean less.

Autistic Individuals Who Want To:

  • Better understand their Autistic identity
  • Connect with others who share similar experiences
  • Reduce shame and increase self-acceptance
  • Explore masking and burnout
  • Develop self-advocacy skills
  • Better understand sensory and emotional needs
  • Navigate relationships, school, work and daily life
  • Celebrate Autistic strengths and joy
  • Feel less alone

Parents and Caregivers Who Want To:

  • Better understand their Autistic child
  • Move beyond behaviour-based approaches
  • Support regulation instead of demanding compliance
  • Understand sensory and communication differences
  • Strengthen connection and trust
  • Recognize signs of overwhelm, burnout or distress
  • Support authentic communication
  • Build neurodiversity-affirming parenting skills
  • Create a safer and more supportive home environment

No previous knowledge of autism is required. Formal diagnosis is not required for Autistic participants.

Weekly Discussions May Include:

  • Understanding autism beyond stereotypes
  • Sensory processing and sensory safety
  • Regulation, meltdowns and shutdowns
  • Communication beyond spoken language
  • Executive functioning and daily living
  • Monotropism and deep focus
  • Masking and Autistic burnout
  • Autistic identity and self-acceptance
  • Special interests, strengths and Autistic joy
  • Anxiety and uncertainty
  • Routines, transitions and predictability
  • School and workplace experiences
  • Friendships, relationships and belonging
  • Boundaries and consent
  • Supporting autonomy and self-advocacy
  • Parenting without prioritizing compliance
  • Collaborative problem-solving
  • Creating affirming environments
  • Understanding behaviour as communication
  • Building sustainable support systems

Our Approach

This is not social-skills training designed to make Autistic people appear less Autistic.

It is not focused on eliminating harmless Autistic traits, forcing eye contact or rewarding compliance.

Uniquely Human is grounded in dignity, curiosity, autonomy and the belief that every person deserves to be understood.

Each weekly meeting may include:

  • Autism-affirming education
  • Guided discussion
  • Shared experiences and perspectives
  • Practical strategies
  • Reflection and self-discovery
  • Opportunities to ask questions
  • Resources for continued learning
  • Optional participation and sharing

Participants are never required to disclose personal information or speak before they feel comfortable.

Belonging begins with being understood.

Understanding changes everything. When we stop asking how to make Autistic people appear less Autistic and begin asking what they are experiencing, what they need and how we can support them, we create space for connection, authenticity and belonging.
